iammusic.tv Interview

For those of you new to the name ‘Lippi’ where have you been?

Lippi is a multi-vocalist performer, what is one of those you may ask? Well to sum it up Lippi can beatbox, rap and sing. His latest single ‘Trust Me’ is gaining airplay on the BBC and reaching the Top 10 on Juno’s best seller chart. I caught up with the multi-talented artist and we talked about his new single ‘Bring Back Them Times’, his many projects and of course UK music.

Nikita Chauhan: You bring a whole new meaning to word ‘multi-talented’ beat-boxing, singing, rapping. When did you realise that you had these talents and what made you decide to pursue it?

Lippi: “I have been writing since I was young, but it was more lyrical poetry. Beatboxing wise I picked it up at around 10 years old and just kept practicing ’till I got pretty good at it. I believe in understanding yourself as an artist before putting out music, so I’ve just been working away.”

NC: Some people may recognise you from your appearance earlier this year on the Channel 4’s hit show Summer Daze how was the festival summer experience?

L: “The festival experience was amazing! I want to do it every year till I can’t perform no more! It is a time of year where life is always on edge. Waking up at 4am to get on three to four different trains to a huge field somewhere in the UK every week was so exciting! The artists I bumped into along the way also made the experience as great as it was.”

If you’re wondering, he met Ed Sheeran, BBK, Friendly Fires and many more.

NC: I caught up with you at Global Gathering and you were getting ready to perform on stage. What was your highlight during the festival season whilst on Summer Daze?

L: “The highlight would have to be performing at V Festival alongside the Friendly Fires on the main-stage, that was a mad feeling! Also being on stage watching Ed Sheeran’s whole set with my manager.”

“I would rather write 64 bars of lyrics that would entice an entire generation than write 640 words on Law that would probably bore even the tutor that was marking it. If you don’t love something you do, don’t do it.” At the age of twenty Lippi decided to go from being top of the university class to being top of the music game.

And he’s got an impressive track record. Winner of the BBC Performing Arts Award and runner up in the UK Beatboxing Championship at the tender age of sixteen, Lippi’s performed Glastonbury, V and Global Gathering, raised the stage with artists such as Akon, The Game and Tinie Tempah, and made videos with the likes of JLS, Ms Dynamite and Kano.

From his beatboxing days as Lippicool to the fully rounded singer, rapper and all-round musician whose tunes you’re enjoying today, Lippi’s got it all. He’s worked with big underground names like Mr Virgo and Yaan Cavaille, been endorsed on 1xtra by Nihal and Radio 1 by Fearne Cotton, and made tv & film appearances in This is England, Summer Daze with Blackberry and Murphy’s Law.

It’s been a long journey but it’s still only just beginning. With two singles under his belt and an album on the way, Lippi is ready to dominate the charts. Make sure you’re ready to witness music’s next big thing.
